MERU UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY IS AWARDED A CHARTER

His Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki, on Friday, March 1, 2013, awarded the Charter to Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST) at a colourful ceremony held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).  Dr. James Mwangi, CBS, Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Equity Bank, was installed as the first Chancellor of MUST.

Since its establishment in 2009, Meru University College of Science and Technology (MUCST) has been operating as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

The award comes after years of mentorship by its “mother” University (JKUAT) and periodic rigorous assessment and accreditation inspection by the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) the precursor to the current Commission for University Education (CUE). The Commission has certified that MUST is now ready to take up the status of a full fledged University.

The Charter gives MUST the power to grant degrees and to acquire the full University status with immediate effect.  Currently, Meru University has close to over 3000 students drawn from all over Kenya pursuing courses in Agriculture, Engineering, IT & Computer Science, Business, Pure & Applied Sciences, Health Sciences among others. We aim to provide our students with an innovative, supportive and dynamic culture.

The university is currently developing market-relevant courses with the participation of stakeholders, so that our students are well prepared for the world of work when they graduate. The university has taken steps to assure the quality of its programmes leading to its qualifications. Courses are overseen by staff with a high level of expertise gained through their research activity, linkages with industry and professional experience.

“The Award of Charter to MUST has been received well by the community and Kenyans at large especially as it is expected to make MUST the principal provider of University education in the upper Eastern and North Eastern region as well as nationally”, said Prof. Japhet Magambo, Ag. Vice Chancellor, after the event.
