SCHOOL PROFILE

Meru College of Technology (MECOTECH) identified a niche in automotive and later Building Construction courses since its establishment in 1984, offering the courses at Certificate and Diploma levels.  In 2008, the government of Kenya upgraded the then Meru College of Technology (MECOTECH) into a University College and named it Meru University College of Science and Technology (MUCST). During the transition from a college of Technology to a University College, Engineering courses were housed in the Department of Science, Mathematics and Engineering. When the University was awarded the Charter in 2013, a Department of Engineering was then established in the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE). In order to exercise that mandate great effort was put to ensure that Engineering degree programmes were introduced to run concurrently with certificate and diploma courses. The first Engineering degree programmes were introduced in September 2014. The programmes which were introduced and are currently running comprise of:

  1. Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering
  2. Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering
  3. Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering

 

These are 4-year programmes whose graduates will serve the Engineering industry as engineering technologists.  The introduction of these programmes justified the creation of Department of Engineering which was domiciled in the School of Information Technology and later led to establishment of School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) in July 2016.

 

SEA’s vision is to be a leading centre of excellence in Engineering and Architecture.  In this regard we focus on furnishing our students with the finest instruction and strong foundations in Engineering and Architecture.  Our core values which are integrity, commitment, academic and research excellence, professionalism, innovation, teamwork, equity and social justice and customer responsiveness are our guiding pillars which the School fraternity strongly believes in. 

 

Recently the School received modern training equipment from the Government.  The equipment has been installed in our newly built workshops and they will go a long way in enhancing the quality of training in the School.  In addition, a new building at the main campus which is popularly known as Engineering Complex is substantially complete.  The building is intended to house all the Engineering Departments in a very comfortable and serene environment which is conducive for effective learning.  These facilities support our resolve to train and produce graduates with fine skills and deep knowledge of the engineering and architectural disciplines in which they are trained.

 

The aspiration of Meru University of Science and Technology is to expand further the training of Engineers because there is great global demand for them.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

Bachelor of Technology (Electrical Engineering)

A candidate must satisfy the following minimum requirements: 1.       Be a holder of KSCE Mean Grade of C+ and above, in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

In addition, students are expected to have obtained at least a grade C+ in each of the cluster subjects in the following cluster of subjects in KCSE examinations:

Cluster Subjects

3.                   Chemistry

4.                   Biology/any Group III/any Group IV/any Group V.

KCSE Subject Grouping

Group I: English, Kiswahili, Mathematics

Group II: Biology, Physics, Chemistry

Group III: History and Government, Geography, Christian Religious Education, Islamic Religious Education, Hindu Religious Education

Group IV: Home Science, Art and Design, Agriculture, Aviation Technology, Computer Studies, Drawing and Design, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Metalwork and Building Construction.

Group V: French, German, Arabic, Music, Business Studies or

2.       A-Levels or Equivalent

Students should have a minimum of two (2) principal passes in Mathematics and Physics and a subsidiary level pass in Chemistry with a credit pass in English at O-Level or

 

3.       Diploma or Equivalent

Be a holder of credit pass of KNEC Diploma/Higher National Diploma in Civil, Electrical and Electronics or Mechanical Engineering from KNEC or its equivalent.
