INTRODUCTION
Meru University of Science and Technology recognizes the critical role played by continuous learning in individual’s competitiveness and employability. Continuous learning provides a platform for enhancing technical and professional skills for personal development and keeping pace with the ever constantly changing world. It is in this view that Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) has established a centre for professional studies that aims at conducting and managing all professional and short courses in the University.
The main aim of Professional and short courses is to provide students with specific skills to earn more practical experience in a specific area of specialization. In this regard MUST recognizes the importance of Professional and short courses in realizing ways of imparting skills required for the job market. Guided by this, the University established the Directorate of Professional and Short Courses (PSC) to mainstream short courses into the University core function of training to leverage on existing academic resource and infrastructure.
Centre for Professional Studies has so far established several professional/short courses to enhance accessibility for both the University Community and the nation at large. All these courses are fairly priced and training takes place off working hours for inclusivity and convenience to the working class.

SHORT COURSE NAME: WASH IN EMERGENCIES
Charges: KES 15,000
COURSE PURPOSE:
The Purpose of this course is to provide guidance and tools to prepare for deployment to emergency responses in a WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) role, with a focus on sanitation. It will ensure an understanding of the interdisciplinary humanitarian action.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon Completion of the course, learners should be able to:
- Describe the history of humanitarian aid, key elements of the legal context and key sectors of humanitarian assistance, and apply humanitarian principles and work within the framework and coordination of humanitarian assistance;
- Describe the stages of humanitarian aid and recognise the main actors of the international relief system and their respective mandates;
- Explain the key environmental sanitation needs and approaches common in emergency situations;
- Compare the suitability of different technical options depending on the phase of emergency and variety of practical settings, adjusting to time and resources available;
- To implement a specific sanitation solution in an emergency situation
- Plan, implement and monitor a sanitation response to a disaster situation
- Integrate and apply the theory in a case scenario
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Undergraduate Degree in Public health, Sanitation, Environmental Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Civil Engineering, Water Engineering or any other relevant Degree.
NB: Professionals working in Humanitarian context, WASH, Women, PWDs are encouraged to apply.
