Genetics and Cytogenetics (SBT 3250) [45 LH]
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE
To provide learners with the knowledge on genetic code and its role in plants life, plant breeding and plant biotechnology.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, the learner should be able to:
- Describe Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance
- Describe the genetic code and the process of transcription of RNA from DNA.
- Sketch the structure of a chromosome
- Explain mutations, sources, types and role in plants
Definition of genetics and cytogenetics. Mendel and genetics The Genetic code. Transformation and transduction. Mendelian inheritance. Cell division. Sex determination. Chromosome variations in size, number and structure. Mutations: types, sources and impact on genetic diversity. Non-Mendelian inheritance; linkage, cytoplasmic inheritance, multiple alleles, gene interactions. Quantitative and population genetics
