INTRODUCTION

The recent rapid increase in student population has made it necessary for the University to seek alternative source of student hostels. Approximately 3,500 new students are expected in the September, 2021 intake. This increase will raise the number of active students to approximately 10,100. This figure accounts for both the Government Sponsored Students (Kuccps) and the Self-Sponsored Students (SSP). The population will be distributed between the main, town and Marimba Learning Center. To solve the accommodation dilemma, the University decided to engage the private Hostel Providers in order to get information on the location, cost, and security among other available social amenities and avail the information to both the expected (new) and the continuing students. A team comprising of members from the Dean of Students office, SAMU, and the Halls Officer was sent to assess the bed capacity of the University halls of residence and establish accommodation capacity for all private hostels. The group was also provided with a report prepared in July, 2010 concerning the available private hostels and this was instrumental in the preparation of this report.

• Many rooms confirmed available by the rent collection agents were either not complete, under renovation not satisfactory to the University officers and hence not listed in this report.
