MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SECURITY AND SAFETY DEPARTMENT AT MERU UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Welcome to the department of Security and safety at Meru University of Science and Technology that has been established directly under the office of the Vice Chancellor. The department provides law enforcement services to the University community on 24/7 basis, throughout.

Security in a corporate environment is a vital factor that should be embraced closely. All stakeholders of MUST need to have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and obligations in fostering a secure environment and avert any impending security threats to the University at their individual level since security starts with each of us.

Human Security and safety is a basic necessity in Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Over the years, the threats to security and safety globally have grown in complexity, volatility and diversity. The challenges are compounded by regional perspectives with Kenya’s geopolitical location lying within the Horn of Africa that is prone to crime.

Institutions in Kenya, generally, have fallen victim to security threats and institutions of higher learning have not been spared in this respect, with issues of terrorism and radicalization concerns aggravating insecurity.

The Security and Safety of all MUST assets, assets of the customers/visitors, contractors and other stakeholders including suppliers remains a fundamental responsibility of the institution so as to achieve its mission and mandate.

The department of security was founded on the following objectives:

 

    • To safeguard the University assets against threats emanating from either criminal activity or accidental loss
    • To identify, assess, record and manage any potential threats/loss(es)
    • To maintain law and order in the university so as to create a conducive environment for learning
    • To protect life of all members of the university community
    • To employ intelligence so as to detect and prevent crime from occurring through deterrence.
    • To conduct investigations geared towards unearthing crime in the unfortunate circumstances that it occurs.
    • To apprehend offenders and process them as provided for by law through criminal justice system or through University internal mechanism.

 

Security department staff and security personnel from the outsourced security company are dedicated to serve the needs of Meru University of Science and Technology within the parameters of their mandate.

I wish you a fruitful interaction with security department which has offices in the main campus at Nchiru and each of her satellite campuses at Meru town, Mariene and Marimba learning Centre.
