Preparing students for the future of work requires more than academic knowledge. It requires exposure to practical skills, professional networks, global opportunities and the realities of today’s employment landscape.

Recently, the Directorate of Career and Alumni Services, Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) convened a two-day career-readiness seminar for third- and fourth-year students at the Multi-Purpose Hall.

Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Romanus Odhiambo and Dr. Njathi Ibuathu, Director, Career and Alumni Services, and in partnership with the Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) and the American Space initiative, the programme brought together professionals whose expertise offered students practical perspectives for navigating the transition from university to the workplace.

The programme featured insights from Mr. Wilson Kabucho, who guided students on research referencing and the effective use of academic information resources; Mr. Matheka Nichodemus, who shared insights on international mobility, visa processes and overseas opportunities; and Mr. Michael Kazungu, who explored leadership, civic engagement and pathways to global leadership opportunities.

The conversation was further enriched by Humphrey Ijakaa and Sharon Musyoki of the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS), Nairobi, who engaged School of Business and Economics students on professional qualification pathways, career opportunities and corporate governance.

Together, these engagements reinforced a vital message: career development is not simply about securing a job. It is about building competence, integrity, adaptability and a professional identity capable of creating meaningful impact.
