The Global Workshop on Alternative Building Materials and Technology (G-MATE), is a collaborative event of several institutions which include Meru University of Science & Technology (Kenya), Uppsala University (Sweden), University of Lagos (Nigeria), Makerere University (Uganda) and University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).  The consortium will be holding an international workshop and exhibition to be held on 24th – 25th October, 2022 at Meru University of Science & Technology – main campus, Nchiru – Meru County.

The University is located in Meru County in Kenya, one of the fastest-growing cosmopolitan urban areas on the northeast slopes of Mount Kenya with a rich historic cultural heritage of Ameru people, magnificent forests and national parks. The main campus is situated at Nchiru, about 15km from Meru town along the Meru-Maua Road.  Since its inception, the University has continued to play a leading role in the development and expansion of opportunities for higher education, research and community service.

The workshop will involve national and international participants from academia, industry and policymakers in the building and construction industry.  The aim of the workshop is to create a platform for exchange of knowledge and ideas between the researchers from both local and international institutions on alternative binders and block production, including new advances in knowledge. This will be delivered through short presentations, interactive sessions and exhibitions of products, services & technologies by the industry players.

The theme for the workshop is: “Alternative Building materials for affordable & Low carbon housing in Sub-Saharan Africa.” 

The sub-themes;

  1. Low-carbon & low-cost building binders and technologies
  2. Climate change and housing
  3. Non-convectional building materials and technologies
  4. Social approaches to housing
  5. Financing housing projects
  6. Land and housing

The exhibition is designed to provide a platform for the upcoming technology based on alternative building materials.  Exhibitors will showcase the modern solutions to potential current or future existing and potential clients ranging from individual housing projects to churches, schools and contractors, who aspire to reduce building and construction costs, achieve affordable housing agenda as the world turns to a greener building and construction industry.
