MUST and Compassion International Partner to Transform Lives

In a world where education and skills are the key to unlocking brighter futures, collaborations that focus on empowering youth are more essential than ever. The partnership between Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Compassion International demonstrates this principle, aiming to create lasting change for children and young people living in poverty in Kenya.
This strategic collaboration has one overarching goal: to positively influence the long-term development of vulnerable youth by equipping them with the skills and opportunities necessary to succeed. Through targeted programmes and shared resources, this partnership is transforming lives, families and communities.
At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to equipping young people aged 18 to 22 with essential technical skills that boost employability. Recognizing the challenges faced by youth from low-income families, the program provides hands-on training in various technical fields such as:

  • Hairdressing and beauty therapy
  • Yoghurt making and bakery
  • Digital photography
  • Mobile phone repairs
  • Computer and laptop repairs
  • Graphic design and online writing
  • Website design
  • Business and life skills

By focusing on practical and market-relevant skills, the partnership is bridging the gap between limited opportunities and the potential for gainful employment or entrepreneurship.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this partnership is its emphasis on entrepreneurship. Trainees are not only taught technical skills but are also guided on how to start and manage their own businesses. From the artistry of beauty therapy to the precision of graphic design, participants are encouraged to dream big and take charge of their economic futures.

The program also instills a culture of lifelong learning, motivating participants to pursue further education and training in their chosen fields. This holistic approach ensures that the graduates remain competitive and adaptable in an ever-evolving job market.

In 2024, the partnership celebrated a significant milestone: the successful training of 212 young people between June and August. These trainees underwent rigorous instruction and mentorship, culminating in a colorful graduation ceremony on 16th August, 2024.

For many, this graduation was a gateway to opportunity. Today, these graduates are pursuing diverse careers, with some starting businesses and others securing employment in technical fields. Their stories reflect the profound impact of this initiative on not only their lives but also on their families and communities.

The foundation of this partnership is a shared commitment to youth empowerment. On 16th January, 2024, representatives from both institutions convened at Meru University of Science and Technology to discuss the Memorandum of Understanding that solidifies this collaboration.
