Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) has planted over 3,000 trees at its Marimba Campus in an environmental conservation exercise held today, Friday, September 4, 2026, ahead of the 2nd Edition of the MUST Mt Kenya Mountain Run 2026.

The tree-planting exercise was led by the Chair of the University Council, Prof. James Ireri Kanya, PhD, and brought together members of the University community, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and local community members.

The initiative underscores the University’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability while reinforcing the broader objectives of the MUST Mt Kenya Mountain Run, which brings together the University and its partners in support of important social and environmental causes.

The planting of more than 3,000 tree seedlings at Marimba Campus forms part of activities leading up to tomorrow’s Mountain Run, which will be held under the theme “Running for Education, Cancer Research and Conservation.”

Speaking during the exercise, Prof. Kanya emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges and creating a sustainable future for generations to come. The participation of KDF, KFS, University staff and members of the surrounding community demonstrated the power of partnerships in advancing environmental conservation and community development.

The MUST Mt Kenya Mountain Run is an initiative that goes beyond sport. It provides a platform to mobilize support for education, contribute to cancer research, and promote environmental conservation. Through the event, participants and partners come together to make a meaningful contribution to causes that directly impact communities.

As the University prepares for the second edition of the Mountain Run, today’s tree-planting exercise has set the tone for an event centered on purpose, unity and positive impact.

Tomorrow 5th September, different participants will take to the course with a shared commitment to run for a cause, support education, advance cancer research and conserve the environment.

The mountain awaits. The cause is greater. Together, we run for a better future.
