4th Annual Meru University International Conference (MUSTIC 2025)

Meru University of Science and Technology successfully hosted the 4th Annual Meru University International Conference (MUSTIC 2025) from Wednesday, 25th June to Friday, 27th June 2025. The three-day event brought together researchers, students, industry experts, policymakers, and global partners under the theme:

“Innovative Research for Community Empowerment: Addressing Global Challenges and Sustainable Livelihoods.”

The conference officially opened on Wednesday with a keynote address by Prof. Emeritus Ratemo W. Michieka, Chancellor of Tharaka University. He highlighted the role of research in transforming communities and solving global challenges. The opening also featured remarks from Prof. Simon Thuranira (DVC, ARSA), Prof. Hilda (DVC, AFP), Dr. Karanja (Registrar), and Prof. Amos Omamo (Director of Research, Innovation, Commercialization and Extension). Delegates from Italy, the Netherlands,and other global institutions also participated.

On Day 2, the university was honored to host Dr. Jemima Onsare as the Chief Guest, representing the Principal Secretary, State Department for Higher Education and Research. She emphasized the need for impactful, community-driven research that aligns with national development goals.

A heartfelt and inspiring address was delivered by Dr. Narendra Raval (Guru), CEO of Devki Group of Companies and Chancellor of Egerton University, who encouraged students to embrace humility, work with their hands, and never be ashamed to start small.

“Start by dreaming, because dreaming is free,” he said.

The day also featured a virtual address by Dr. Roberto Natali, Italian Ambassador to Kenya, who expressed support for continued collaboration in education and innovation.

In his address on the second day of the conference, Vice Chancellor Prof. Romanus Odhiambo emphasized the importance of research as a vehicle for both local and global transformation. He highlighted the spirit of collaboration and intellectual exchange that MUSTIC 2025 aimed to foster:

“Together, we can contribute meaningfully to a sustainable industrial future for Kenya and the region. With over 170 research presentations across all disciplines and schools at MUST, this conference serves as a bridge, connecting countries, uniting disciplines, and linking knowledge to action. Let us use this moment not only to share but also to challenge assumptions, unlearn outdated ideas, relearn with fresh perspective, and co-create solutions that truly empower communities.”

Speaking on behalf of the University Council, Prof. James Ireri Kanya, Council Chair, described the conference as a critical milestone in the university’s strategic direction. His remarks reaffirmed the Council’s strong support for research-led development:

“As Chair of the University Council, I view this conference not just as a scientific gathering, but as a key checkpoint on our institutional journey. We are proud to support a university that places research and innovation at the core of its mission, while staying grounded in the urgent realities of our time, from food security and climate change to youth empowerment and industrial sustainability.”

“The Council remains firmly committed to strengthening our research infrastructure, supporting the protection of intellectual property, and nurturing regional partnerships. We will continue to create space for our researchers and students to innovate with confidence, purpose, and relevance.”

Day 3 concluded the conference with a full schedule of academic presentations and student-led innovations. Researchers shared findings across disciplines, with a strong emphasis on real-world impact and sustainable solutions.

The conference concluded on a strong and hopeful note with a closing address delivered by Prof. Simon Thuranira, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic, Research and Student Affairs (DVC-ARSA), speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. He was accompanied by Prof. Hilda, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Administration, Finance and Planning, and Prof. Omamo, Director of RICE (Research, Innovation, Commercialization & Extension).

In his remarks, Prof. Thuranira expressed sincere appreciation to all participants, including researchers, students, faculty, and distinguished guests for their active involvement and commitment throughout the three-day event. He extended a special thank you to international delegates from eight different countries, whose presence contributed to the conference’s diverse and enriching environment.

Reflecting on the growth of the conference, Prof. Thuranira proudly noted the remarkable journey of MUSTIC.

“When this conference began, we received just 22 abstracts. Today, we are closing MUSTIC 2025 with a total of 182 presentations, a clear indication of how far we’ve come and the growing confidence in our research community.”

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to sustaining this momentum, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, and building stronger regional and international research networks.

“We leave here not only with knowledge shared, but with new partnerships formed and new challenges accepted. We now set our sights on MUSTIC 2026, and we invite you all to join us again as we continue this journey together,” he concluded.

MUSTIC 2025 reaffirmed Meru University’s commitment to using research as a tool for transformation. The university extends its sincere appreciation to all speakers, delegates, and participants who made the event a success and looks forward to welcoming even greater participation at MUSTIC 2026.

    I came out of the conference extremely fulfilled in terms of knowledge from various presenters. Meru University of Science and Technology KEEP KEEPING UP
