Low-Carbon Construction Revolution in East Africa: ICC and Omya East Africa Unite for Sustainable Cement Innovation & 80th RILEM Week 2026 Conference

In a significant step toward advancing Kenya’s sustainable construction agenda in East Africa, Dr. Joseph Mwiti Marangu, Director, Institute of Cement & Concrete (ICC), Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST), held a strategic visit to Omya East Africa in Nairobi. The engagement, hosted by General Manager Francis Kirema Elias, established a strong foundation for collaboration in low-carbon cement research, innovative concrete products and advanced construction chemical solutions for our upcoming BSc and short courses in Construction Chemicals.

Discussions focused on integrating Omya’s calcium carbonate fillers and specialty chemicals with ICC’s research expertise. Key areas included the development of high-performance, low-carbon cement blends and bio-admixtures aimed at reducing carbon emissions while improving durability of infrastructure. Omya’s leadership in mineral-based additives for dry mortars, paints and cement production aligns closely with the mission of ICC to advance scientific research, training and community outreach in cement & concrete technologies in Kenya.

A major highlight was collaboration around the 80th RILEM Week 2026 & 3rd ACCTA International Conference, scheduled for 5th – 11th September 2026 at Emara Ole Sereni Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya. Under the theme “Advancing Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Construction Technologies,” the conference will bring together global experts to promote climate-resilient technologies, strengthen research partnerships, and drive innovation in construction.

Both teams are exploring co-hosting technical sessions, workshops and research exhibitions to position East Africa at the forefront of global construction innovation.

This partnership reflects the power of academia-industry collaboration in driving green building solutions and accelerating climate-resilient infrastructure across Africa.
