The Institute of Cement & Concrete (ICC) at Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST) has announced a strategic collaboration with ZHJ Company Limited, a leading Kenyan firm specializing in advanced construction chemicals, materials and building chemistry.

This partnership brings together the core mandates of both institutions, with a strong focus on scientific research, professional training, community outreach initiatives, including joint workshops and seminars, and the innovation of sustainable construction chemicals and materials. The move signals a bold new direction for the ICC, which plans to roll out dedicated courses on construction chemicals in its upcoming intake in September 2026.

The signing ceremony was graced by Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, Vice Chancellor of MUST, managing officials from ZHJ Company Limited and the Director of the ICC, Dr. Joseph Mwiti Marangu.

At the heart of the collaboration is a shared commitment to promoting construction practices that are sustainable, long-lasting and cost-effective across Sub Saharan Africa and beyond. The two institutions aim to develop construction technologies that enable the production of strong, high-performance concrete while using less cement, thus significantly reducing carbon emissions in the construction industry.

The event concluded with an exclusive tour of the Institute’s four laboratories: the Cement Lab., the Construction Chemicals Lab., the Physical Testing Lab., and the newly established Soil Cement Lab. These facilities underscore the Institute’s growing capacity for hands-on training and cutting-edge research.

With this strategic alliance, MUST and ZHJ Company Limited are positioning themselves at the forefront of green construction innovation in Africa, therefore equipping the next generation of engineers and technicians with the skills needed to build a more sustainable future.
