Circular by Design: How a Kenyan Partnership Is Reinventing Cement & Concrete from Waste Products
In a significant step toward sustainable construction, the Institute of Cement & Concrete (ICC), Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST) has joined hands with the Akili Group, a Kenyan social enterprise focused on sustainable agriculture and environmental solutions. Their partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), a ceremony that marked the beginning of a shared mission to revolutionize the building industry from the ground up.

The MOU falls under the ambitious Circular B-I/O project, an innovative research initiative at ICC in collaboration with the Germany’s Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences. Funded by the VolkswagenStiftung foundation, the project explores the untapped potential of bio-based materials to create eco-friendly cement blends. The core idea is both simple and visionary: transform heterogeneous agricultural wastes and industrial by-products into high-performance construction materials. By developing cement blends from these discarded resources, the project aims to establish a truly circular bio-based ecosystem – one that drastically reduces the carbon footprint of concrete production.
