Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) Women’s Championships Thrill at Meru University

The 14th edition of the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) Women’s Championships took center stage at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) from March 7th to 9th, 2025. This year’s championship introduced two exciting new sports, Pool and Frisbee, expanding the competition’s diversity.

Our Meru University student’s choir played a vital role in keeping the crowd entertained and energized during the opening and closing of the KUSF Women’s Championships. With their powerful vocals and well-rehearsed performances, they added a vibrant atmosphere to the event, lifting spirits and celebrating every moment of triumph.

Under the theme “Accelerating Health and Talent for University Women Through Sport,” the tournament brought together over 30 universities, competing in more than 20 sporting disciplines. The championship aimed to not only celebrate women in sports but also encourage teamwork, health, and talent development.

KUSF President Mr. Alfred Kibet Rono expressed his gratitude to Meru University for their warm hospitality and encouraged participants to embrace fair competition.

“From the day the first edition kicked off a decade ago at JKUAT, we have made tremendous progress. KUSF has grown into a platform that not only showcases athletic talent but also fosters friendship and unity. Sports have the power to unite, break barriers, and create opportunities for all women in sports. Let this event be not only about bagging medals but also about creating lifelong memories,” he said.

With International Women’s Day being marked on March 8th, the championship served as a timely celebration of women’s achievements in sports.

The opening ceremony was graced by former Meru County Woman Representative Hon. Florence Kajuju, who served as the chief guest. She commended KUSF for setting dedicated dates for women’s sports and applauded Meru University for being at the forefront of promoting athletics in the region.

Meru University Vice-Chancellor, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Ag.) Prof. Hilda, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to sports. She emphasized that sports play a crucial role in students’ personal and professional growth, and the university would continue to uphold its rich sporting culture.

From Friday to Sunday, the university grounds were a hub of high-energy competitions, with teams displaying skill, endurance, and teamwork. The final matches on Sunday were particularly intense, as universities battled for top honors.

The closing ceremony was led by Fridah Makena Mugambi, the Principal Education Officer from the State Department for Education and Research. She praised the participants for their effort and teamwork, emphasizing that sports not only create lasting bonds but also teach vital lessons in discipline and perseverance.

“This event was not only about competition but also about collaboration. I witnessed great moments of unity and resilience. May all participants carry this experience forward and continue excelling in future tournaments,” she remarked.

The host university, Meru University of Science and Technology, put up a remarkable performance, securing top positions in several disciplines:

  • Scrabble – 3rd place 🥉

  • Taekwondo – 2nd place 🥈
  • Tennis – 2nd place 🥈
  • Table Tennis – 1st place 🥇

As the curtains fell on this year’s KUSF Women’s Championships, Dr. Ramara Timothy, Director of Sports at Meru University, expressed appreciation to all the participants and organizers. He noted that the event was a major success, and he looked forward to even greater participation in future editions.
