In the heart of Meru County, where rolling hills meet bold ambitions for growth, a pivotal moment is shaping the future of sustainable construction

During a courtesy visit, Dr. Joseph Mwiti Marangu engaged in strategic discussions with Rev. Caroline Kaberia, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Tourism, and Cooperatives to leverage research and innovation to drive industrial growth and sustainable development in Meru’s construction sector.  

At the core of the discussion was a commitment to transform locally available resources into practical, market-ready solutions. The focus areas centered on research, commercialization, industrial development and innovation—which are all aligned towards one goal: building a resilient, green economy.

The ICC is championing the development of low-carbon cement blends derived from locally abundant materials such as kaolinitic clays and limestone. This approach supports global sustainability goals while addressing local needs and reducing carbon  emissions, lowering construction costs, and promoting a circular economy.

One standout innovation is the introduction of Hollow Interlocking Concrete Blocks made from low-carbon cement blends. These blocks offer multiple advantages:

• Cost efficiency: Reducing the overall cost of building homes and infrastructure
• Durability: Providing a stronger alternative to machine-cut stones
• Material efficiency: Minimizing the quantity of construction materials required
• Environmental impact: Lowering carbon emissions in the construction process

Beyond innovation, the partnership places strong emphasis on youth empowerment. ICC aims to train, equip and certify young people in the production of these sustainable building materials thus creating a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of a growing green construction industry.

Through collaboration with the county government, particularly under the leadership of Youth Affairs, Sports, Gender and Social Development CECM Mr. Elias Murega, the initiative will integrate with the Meru Youth Service program to open up employment opportunities, foster entrepreneurship and provide a sustainable livelihood pathway for the youth of Meru.

This partnership reflects a broader commitment by MUST and Meru County to bridge the gap between academia and real-world application. By translating cutting-edge research into scalable, community-level solutions, that are laying the groundwork for a more industrialized and environmentally conscious county.

As the leaders concluded their meeting, one message stood out clearly: collaboration is the cornerstone of progress. With strong institutional support and a shared vision, Meru County is set to become a model for sustainable construction and inclusive economic growth.
