Meru University of Science and Technology has commenced a two-day training on the self-assessment of academic programmes, bringing together committee members drawn from the University’s eight schools.

The training is aimed at equipping participants with the knowledge and skills required to undertake a comprehensive self-assessment of selected academic programmes in line with the Commission for University Education (CUE) quality assurance requirements. The exercise, which is expected to take about three months, will culminate in the preparation of reports to be shared with Senate and submitted to the Commission for University Education.

The training is being facilitated by Mr. Benson Kimani, Assistant Commission Secretary for Quality Assurance at CUE, who is guiding participants on the standards, procedures, and expectations of the self-assessment process.

Speaking during the opening session, the DVC (ARSA), Prof Simon Thuranira emphasized that self-assessment is an important process in safeguarding and enhancing the quality of academic programmes in the University. He noted that the exercise provides an opportunity for the institution to critically reflect on its academic offerings, identify strengths and gaps, and put in place measures for continuous improvement.

Also speaking during the training, the Director of Quality Assurance, Prof. Gitonga Nkanata, described the exercise as a critical step in strengthening the quality and relevance of academic programmes offered by the University. He observed that self-assessment enables institutions to examine their performance, identify areas that require improvement, and develop practical strategies for enhancing teaching, learning, research, and service delivery.

Prof. Nkanata encouraged participants to approach the process with dedication, honesty, and professionalism so that the findings can meaningfully support the University’s quest for academic excellence and institutional growth.

The training marks an important milestone in Meru University of Science and Technology’s continued commitment to quality assurance, accountability, and the delivery of high-quality academic programmes that respond to societal and professional needs.
