ENGAGE Project Enhances Data Science Education at MUST

Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) had the honor of hosting members of the ENGAGE project, a collaborative initiative spearheaded by the University of Nairobi and the University of California in San Francisco. The delegation, led by the Project Principal Investigator, Prof. Julius Oyugi, visited Meru University of Science and Technology to deliver computers and other vital resources that will be instrumental in training 15 girls in Data Science with a focus on Public Health.
The equipment was received by our Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, who expressed his gratitude for the support extended by the ENGAGE project. This initiative aligns perfectly with the University’s commitment to advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and empowering young women in the field of Data Science.
Prof. Romanus Odhiambo remarked, “We are thrilled to be a part of this transformative initiative that not only enhances our technological resources but also fosters the growth of our students in critical areas like public health and machine learning. The support from the ENGAGE project is a testament to the power of collaboration in driving educational excellence and societal impact.”

The donated equipment, which includes state-of-the-art computers and software tools, will provide the necessary infrastructure for the comprehensive training program set to take place from 5th to 29th August 2024. This program aims to equip the selected girls with cutting-edge data science skills, empowering them to tackle pressing public health challenges in their communities.
Prior to this significant donation, ENGAGE facilitated an intensive training session for Meru University staff members who will be involved in the training process. This preparatory workshop ensured that the staff are well-equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to effectively mentor and guide the students throughout the training program.

Prof. Julius Oyugi highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “By focusing on public health, the ENGAGE project addresses a critical need in our communities, ensuring that our future leaders are equipped to tackle some of the most pressing health challenges. We are delighted to partner with Meru University of Science and Technology in this noble endeavor and look forward to witnessing the positive impact on the students and the broader community.”
The ENGAGE project, with its mission to enable girls in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and grow expertise in Data Science and Public Health, continues to pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future in STEM education. Meru University of Science and Technology is proud to be part of this journey, fostering a new generation of skilled and empowered young women ready to make a difference in the world.
