MUST Hosts Opening Ceremony for ENGAGE Project in AI and Data Science
Meru University of Science and Technology proudly hosted the opening ceremony for the ENGAGE project, a significant initiative aimed at empowering girls in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science with a focus on public health. This project is a collaborative effort between the University of Nairobi, the University of California San Francisco and Meru University of Science and Technology.
The ceremony was graced by our Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, who officially opened the event. In his address, Prof. Odhiambo emphasized the importance of the ENGAGE project in fostering gender diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields and its potential impact on public health innovation.
Also, in attendance were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Simon Thuranira, Registrar Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Stephen Karanja, Regional Coordinators, Dr. Grace Gakii and Dr. Jane Rutto and Trainers/Mentors Ms. Mary Gacheri and Caroline Karani.
The event marked the beginning of an intensive training period for the fifteen selected girls from various regions, who had already reported and settled in eager to embark on their learning journey. These students will receive comprehensive training in Data Science and AI, equipped with the latest tools and methodologies to tackle real-world public health challenges.
The trainers and mentors present reaffirmed their dedication to guiding and supporting the participants throughout the program. Their mentorship will be crucial in shaping the skills and knowledge of these young women, preparing them for impactful careers in technology and health sectors.
The ENGAGE project represents a significant step towards bridging the gender gap in STEM and enhancing public health through technology. Meru University of Science and Technology is honored to be part of this transformative journey, fostering innovation and empowerment in the next generation of leaders.
