Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) Visits Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST)
Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) had the pleasure of hosting a delegation from the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) on Monday, July 22, 2024. This visit marks a significant milestone in MUST’s ongoing journey towards enhancing its Engineering and Architecture programmes, solidifying the University’s commitment to quality education and marketable programmes.
The EBK team, led by the Chairman Eng. Erastus K. Mwongera, included Eng. Margeret Ogai (Registrar/CEO, EBK), Eng. Grace Onyango (Director, Capacity Building and Accreditation), Eng. Joel Sutter (Professional Electrical Engineer), among other EBK staff. The delegation was warmly received by the Vice-Chancellor of MUST, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, who expressed his enthusiasm and optimism regarding the visit, particularly as the University is in the final stages of developing six new Bachelor of Science programmes in Engineering.
The primary purpose of the EBK’s visit was to:
- Sensitize the University, especially the staff of the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA), on the requirements for the recognition of engineering programmes.
- Acquaint faculty members with EBK’s expectations regarding the BSc programmes for the purpose of approval and accreditation by the Board and the Commission for University Education (CUE).
- Explore avenues for future collaboration between EBK and MUST.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the urgency of fast-tracking the accreditation process to ensure that the new engineering programmes can be launched without delay. He reiterated MUST’s unwavering commitment to expanding opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and strengthening its capacity in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) to effectively navigate current and future challenges. “Engineering is crucial to the realization of these endeavors,” Prof. Romanus Odhiambo stated.
EBK pledged to work closely with MUST to ensure that the proposed programmes meet both local and international standards. The need for well-trained engineers to design, operate and maintain various engineering systems essential for the nation’s development was underscored. The EBK team commended MUST for its significant contributions to training other cadres of the engineering team and committed to bringing on board additional stakeholders to facilitate seamless transitions from one cadre to another.
The School of Engineering and Architecture at MUST will actively engage with the EBK to ensure that graduates from the proposed programmes receive top-notch education, training and licensure within the stipulated timelines. This collaboration promises to pave the way for producing highly skilled engineers who will drive Kenya’s development forward.
This visit by EBK is a testament to the forward-thinking leadership at MUST. The Vice-Chancellor’s dedication to taking the university to greater heights is evident in his strategic initiatives and relentless pursuit of excellence. MUST’s commitment to quality education, innovative programmes and industry collaboration continues to position the University as a leader in engineering education and a key player in the nation’s development.
