Meru University of Science and Technology, in partnership with the State Department for Energy and the Kenya Forest Service, successfully conducted a large-scale tree planting exercise at the university grounds under the theme “15 Billion Trees, Wajibu Wetu.” The initiative reaffirmed the university’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The event brought together government officials, university leadership, conservation stakeholders, students, farmers, and members of the surrounding community, all united in promoting sustainable environmental practices and increasing forest cover across the country.

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Energy, was represented by Mr. Alan Machari,CBS, who commended the university for its continued leadership in environmental conservation through tree planting initiatives. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in achieving the national target of planting 15 billion trees and encouraged communities to actively participate in environmental restoration efforts.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, PhD, accompanied by Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Simon Thuranira, PhD and the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Finance and Planning, Prof. Hilda Omae,PhD  underscored the importance of tree planting in safeguarding the environment and securing a sustainable future.

To extend the impact beyond the university, farmers received tree seedlings for planting on their farms, reinforcing the message that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility.
