Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) has firmly aligned itself with national efforts to enhance road safety and enforce responsible use of government vehicles. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, has pledged full institutional support for the mandatory half-day virtual training for all drivers of government vehicles.

The training, conducted on Wednesday, 2nd July 2025, by the Government Vehicle Check Unit (GVCU), was part of a broader campaign to ensure that government drivers across the country adhere to strict road safety protocols and uphold the ethical management of public resources.

Prof. Odhiambo, speaking during the official launch of the nationwide sensitization program, emphasized the crucial role that government drivers play in safeguarding public trust and upholding the image of public institutions.

“Drivers are not just behind the wheel, they are the face of government service and a reflection of our public values,” he stated. “We must equip them with the right knowledge and mindset to protect lives, public resources, and the reputation of our institutions.”

The Vice Chancellor noted that the training is designed to address persistent issues such as reckless driving, fuel mismanagement, vehicle misuse, and poor maintenance habits—challenges that have cost the public sector heavily in the past.

He underscored the need for all government drivers, including those at Meru University, to fully embrace the training and adopt a culture of accountability, discipline, and professionalism.

“Our goal is clear, no accidents, no waste, no misuse. Just responsible driving that reflects the honor of public service,” Prof. Odhiambo emphasized. “As a university, we are fully committed to this cause. It is not an option, it is a duty. We expect our Transport Officer and every driver to lead by example.”

Prof. Odhiambo also warned that the misuse of government vehicles reflects a breakdown in integrity and called on all staff entrusted with public transport resources to maintain the highest standards.

He assured that Meru University would not only ensure full participation in the training but would also incorporate the key lessons into daily operations, with internal reviews and monitoring mechanisms to maintain compliance and continuous improvement.
