Elly Oginga Alang’o

Mr. Elly Oginga Alang’o, a fourth year student pursuing Bachelor of Education Science (Mathematics/Chemistry) at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) emerged the 2nd place winner (20-24 age category) during the recently concluded UNESCO Clubs 2020 Worldwide Youth Multimedia Contest. This was a competition organized by U.S. Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations through its flag bearing UNESCO Center for Peace and the World Genesis Foundation that invited students worldwide to help develop and propose a strategy to help the United Nations (UN) and all stakeholders to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 as scheduled. Mr. Oginga is also the president of MUST UNESCO Club. This club was established in October 2017 by Dr. Eunice Marete as the Patron. The club was established with the following objectives:

  1. To establish an endowment fund for the needy students in the University.
  2. To promote environmental sustainability though clean-ups, reuse of waste materials and planting of more trees.
  3. To promote peace and harmony within the society particularly the neighboring community.

Since its establishment, MUST UNESCO Club has undertaken several activities to address the UN SDGs among them include: clean-up of the university fence bordering the Meru-Maua Highway; participation in Greening Africa Together (GATo), a programme aimed at encouraging and enabling African youth to fight climate change. Other activities include establishment of an avocado fruit garden to support food security as well as create an endowment fund for needy students; visits to the less fortunate in the community and participation in tree planting exercises in the neighbouring community.

Congratulations Elly and the entire MUST UNESCO Club. We are proud of you!
