Kingdom Bank Strengthens Ties with MUST through Alumni Initiative

In an amazing display of alumni commitment, Kingdom Bank, led by the Meru Branch Manager, William Mwaghogho, paid a special courtesy visit to Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) today. The event was highlighted by the presence of one of MUST’s own, Charles Kilonzo, who graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and is now a Retail Banker at Kingdom Bank’s Nairobi Branch. His role as the liaison for this visit underscores the deep connection and sense of loyalty alumni have towards Meru University of Science and Technology.

The delegation, which also included Linford Mugambi, a Business Banker at Kingdom Bank, was warmly received by our Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, who was flanked by key University leaders, including Nephat Njeru (Finance Officer), Prof. Stephen Makau (Dean of Students) and Richard Kaimenyi (Estates Manager). The Vice-Chancellor was visibly thrilled, stating how honored he felt seeing former students, like Charles, returning to contribute to the institution that played a vital role in shaping their careers.

Charles Kilonzo’s journey with MUST began when he enrolled in the second cohort of the Bachelor of Science in Economics program. His success story is one that the University takes great pride in. Described by his Branch Manager, William Mwaghogho, as one of Kingdom Bank’s finest, Charles felt a compelling need to give back to the University that provided him with quality education and a memorable university experience. His initiative to involve Kingdom Bank in this collaboration is a testament to the strength of the bonds MUST alumni share with the University.

The visit was a continuation of an ongoing relationship between Kingdom Bank and MUST, as earlier this year, the bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University. The bank, a subsidiary of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya since 2020, has a mission to foster the growth of MSMEs, including those run by youth and women-owned enterprises. Their engagement with MUST reflects their commitment to empowering the community, especially through education and partnership with institutions that are shaping future leaders.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed his deep gratitude towards Kingdom Bank for supporting Charles’ vision of giving back to his alma mater. He highlighted the importance of alumni support, noting how the MUST Alumni Association has been instrumental in various university projects. From donating funds to assist needy students to spearheading the construction of a walkway from the Main Gate for the ease of student movement, the alumni’s contributions continue to enhance the University experience for current students.

Kingdom Bank’s Meru branch, which opened its doors in July 2024, was the 22nd branch to be launched in the country. This visit to MUST showcases the bank’s commitment to building strong partnerships in the region, particularly through the efforts of individuals like Charles Kilonzo, whose story of success and return to his roots has now become a source of inspiration for the entire University community.

The visit not only strengthens the partnership between Kingdom Bank and MUST but also serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact a University can have on its students. As Prof. Odhiambo noted during the visit, alumni like Charles exemplify the values of loyalty, service and community that MUST instills in its students. “We are proud of the supportive role our alumni play in shaping the future of this University. Charles is an example of what it means to give back, and we are excited to see the fruits of this collaboration.”

With this visit, Kingdom Bank and MUST are poised to embark on new initiatives that will undoubtedly benefit both the students and the local community, further reinforcing the role of alumni in driving positive change.
