The event, held at the Main Campus was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo and other University officers who imparted words of wisdom and encouragement to the first-year students.
The Vice-Chancellor, in his address, set the tone for the day by highlighting the significance of the journey the students were about to embark upon. “What a wonderful day this is. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the University’s commitment to providing not just academic excellence but also a unique, enriching environment that fosters creativity, innovation, and leadership. He reminded the students of MUST’s humble beginnings in 2009 with only 45 students, and how it has grown to become a premier institution in Kenya and beyond, renowned for excellence in Science, Technology, Research and Innovation.
“Today is the beginning of a new chapter in your lives,” he continued. “A chapter that will be filled with learning, growth and opportunities. The journey that lies ahead is about discovering who you are, building meaningful connections and unlocking your full potential.”
Prof. Charity Gichuki, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Finance and Planning echoed the Vice-Chancellor’s sentiments, expressing her joy at the arrival of the new students. “We are overjoyed to have you here,” she said, her enthusiasm palpable. “Students come and change our lives in a positive way. God has put in you limitless potential. You are the generation we are relying on.”
Prof. Gichuki urged the students to work with integrity, maintain academic curiosity and actively engage with the faculty. “Keep your faculty busy with questions. Acquire skills and impact society,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of using their talents and potential to contribute positively to the world.
In a similar vein, Prof. Thuranira, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, encouraged the students to work hard and maintain discipline throughout their academic journey. He reinforced the importance of adhering to academic schedules, timely payments and maintaining focus on their studies to ensure a smooth and successful academic experience.
The Vice-Chancellor’s speech also touched on the importance of diversity and community at MUST. “You are now part of a community that celebrates diversity. At MUST, we embrace students from all walks of life. Our diversity is our strength,” he said. Prof. Odhiambo called upon the students to honor each other’s cultural backgrounds and build lifelong friendships, reminding them of the importance of living in harmony with the local community.
As the ceremony drew to a close, the students took the matriculation pledge, formally marking the beginning of their academic journey at MUST. The Vice-Chancellor’s final words were a powerful reminder of the potential within each student. “Believe in yourself, remain focused, and know that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Once again, welcome to MUST. I look forward to witnessing your remarkable journey unfold.”
With these inspiring words, the first-year students were officially welcomed into the MUST family, ready to embark on a transformative journey of learning, growth and discovery
