MUST to Lead Leather Research and Development

Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) signed a MoU with Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) to undertake extensive research and foster development within the leather industry.
Kenya Leather Development Council, is a state corporation established pursuant to the State Corporations Act (Cap) 446 of the Laws of Kenya. The agency is mandated to drive the Government’s agenda on the development of the leather sector with the aim of transforming the leather value chain into a vibrant value adding and export oriented industry.
MUST is committed to effectively respond to the gaps within the leather industry by offering short courses on leather development and value addition, with specific focus on factory artisanal skills. This will be run by industry professionals within our School of Agriculture and Food Science (SAFS). https://safs.must.ac.ke/
Speaking during the MoU signing, Dr. Issack M. Noor, CEO, KLDC reiterated the need to empower the leather industry. Citing that the leather industry has an annual revenue of over 53 billion dollars, Dr. Noor encouraged the team to achieve the desired goals in order to empower society and create a positive impact to our country’s economy.
MUST will spearhead leather research as we aim to offer quality training led by competency-based curricula to serve the needs of the sector. Our University’s geographical position offers access to areas with high animal populations catering to the requirements for leather development.
