Revolutionary LC3 technology gains momentum with Institute of Cement & Concrete and global industry backing
In the heart of Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST), the Institute of Cement & Concrete (ICC) is cementing its role as a global powerhouse in low-carbon construction. A landmark strategic meeting hosted by Limestone Calcined Clay Cement Technical Resource Centre for Africa (LC3 TRC Africa)—headquartered at ICC, brought together elite delegates from EPFL (Switzerland) and CBMI Sinoma (China). Their shared mission was to supercharge LC3 adoption across Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa through cutting-edge research, hands-on training, and rapid commercialization.

Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, Vice Chancellor, MUST & Dr. Joseph Mwiti Marangu, ICC Director, warmly welcomed the delegation, expressing deep gratitude for their pivotal support in pioneering sustainable building solutions. LC3 harnesses Africa’s abundant local limestone and kaolinitic clays to slash CO2 emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional cement, without sacrificing strength or durability.

This gathering turbocharged knowledge exchange, lab collaborations, and real-world LC3 pilots, thus fast-tracking its rollout for use in climate-resilient infrastructure. The LC3 technologies position Kenya as the epicenter for climate-smart construction materials in Sub-Saharan Africa, priming the continent for RILEM Week 2026 and beyond.
