Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) in partnership with Moi University and Ghent University (Belgium) has received support from VLIR-UOS (Belgium) through the TEAM 2019 Project to raise awareness of plant-parasitic nematodes. The project will support MUST by equipping a nematology laboratory, renovating a greenhouse and building capacity in nematology.
The Nematology laboratory will be located in the Engineering Complex Block (ECB). It will be used to train students and diagnose nematode problems within the region. Procurement of the necessary equipment is at an advanced stage and soon the laboratory will be fully operational.
As part of capacity building, Mr. Michael Mugambi, a technician from the Department of Agriculture was supported by the TEAM project to attend an intensive training on nematology (Basic Crash Course Nematology) at ICIPE, Kenya in December 2019.
The TEAM project has funded the renovations of the green house which will include installation of steel benches and covering the greenhouse floor with gravel dust for easy drainage. The structure will be used for nematode infection assays and other agricultural based experiments.
